Reading Tuition

What we do

We provide one-to-one reading tuition for children aged 4 and above using a highly structured approach that works. Children who complete our course can read independently, fluently and accurately. If your child is just starting out on their reading journey or if they are struggling to progress, we have the tools to help.

Our courses

We currently offer two courses that are described below. Both courses are suitable for all children over 4 years old, even those who have been diagnosed with dyslexia or other reading difficulties. We recognise that every child is different and we adapt our courses to suit their individual needs.

Basic Skills Course

Children who have little or no prior reading experience should first complete our Basic Skills Course. During this course we introduce your child to the skills they need to read through the use of fun games and worksheets. We will:

• equip your child with a thorough knowledge of the upper- and lower-case phonetic alphabet;
• develop your child's sound blending and word building skills;
• provide reading books that have been carefully selected to reflect the course content; and
• improve your child's concentration, hand eye co-ordination and handwriting skills.

The Basic Skills Course is spread over seven 45-minute one-to-one sessions. But, depending on age, aptitude and ability, the course can be extended or modified to suit the individual needs of your child.

Structured Reading Course

Children who have successfully completed the Basic Skills Course outlined above or who are already familiar with the upper- and lower-case phonetic alphabet should start our Structured Reading Course, a methodical, gradual and highly structured course that combines synthetic phonics with teaching common “non-phonic” words by sight recognition.

During the 45-minute one-to-one sessions we:

• continue to use fun games, activities and worksheets to build on your child’s word building and sound blending skills;
• teach your child how to read multi-syllabic words;
• use reading comprehension exercises and specially selected reading books to further test and hone your child’s skills; and
• if necessary, provide worksheets to improve your child’s handwriting and hand-eye co-ordination skills.

The time needed to complete the Structured Reading Course varies depending on each child. We tailor our course to fit the individual needs of each of our students. As a guide, it could take between 6 to 12 months to complete the course.

Parental Support

The success of our courses depends on frequent reinforcement of the subjects taught. Your daily support at home is therefore essential to your child's success. We recommend that you spend no more than 20 minutes with your child each day completing the clearly explained exercises, but even spending just 10 minutes a day with them can have amazing results. If for any reason you are unable to commit to the homework requirement, speak to us and we can explore the options available to you.
